This weekend saw the inaugural Shanghai Criterium take place on the city streets of the Chinese megalopolis. Presented by the ASO, the Shanghai crit takes it’s cues from the Saitama Criterium, bringing over the stars of the Tour de France and their teams to race the expo race and bring new audiences up close and personal with the sport.
For many of the fans, this would have been their first taste of live pro cycling, likewise, for many of us, it was our first time in their country or city, and undoubtedly the feeling was mutual.
Some might question the validity of an expo style race like this… but it’s not the validity that is important, it’s the ability. And we hope that more travel, more access and new markets brings more growth to the sport, in whatever path it takes to get there.
(By the way, Froome won the crit, followed by Uran and Barguil. ) Full results on Cyclingnews.com and other websites!)
