Michael Hepburn’s Quest

For the perfect Patatas Bravas.

We’re super happy to share that we will be syndicating perhaps the most important measure in the life of any pro rider living in Girona: the perfect Patatas Bravas. Michael Hepburn, in between ya know, prepping for the Olympics on top of normal team duties runs the brilliant BRAVAMETER instagram account.

We’ll be getting some sneaky behind the scenes and exclusive info on the quest over the next few months, (as he picks up on it again) but in the meantime, check out some of the history of the life long taste test.

Nonno finally came through with the goods and he didn’t disappoint. His Fiat Panda hurled into the hotel car park of this quiet beach town at over 100km/h. A spud sack in one hand and a bottle of grappa in the other, he stumbled into the kitchen to start work. These bravas certainly aren’t your stock standard. Brava sauce has been tossed out the window. Freshly roasted capsicum, rosemary and a touch of garlic have replaced the usual creamy sauce. With olive oil drizzled over the bravas, these Patatas Bravas gave me a true Italian experience that I would recommend to anyone. Even those paleo people. 7.5/10 on the bravameter. Hotel Sporting – San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy.

During the Great Depression in the early 30's Bel Selvin sang 'Now's the time to fall in love'- Ahora Es La Epoca De Enamorarse. He said "Potatoes are cheaper, Tomatoes are cheaper.." Clearly the history and idea of Patatas Bravas started here as humans dragged themselves to their feet again with hope. Two is better than one. So if you have the dough and can splash out a few extra €€€, why not do it?! After good recommendations, I found myself at The River Cafe sampling double bravas. The first thing that raised my excitement levels was the presentation. What a great idea! Really bringing forward & displaying the simplicity of brava making! However, I was let down with the brava. The crisp was obvious but so was the dryness of the brava skin. Straight away I could tell that these bad boys had been sitting around chilling for a while. The sauce brought some hope back. Mild spice but very enjoyable. I really believe that with better care and had these bravas been served hot straight from the kitchen, they could have taken us closer to brava perfection. 7/10 on the bravameter. The River Cafe, Girona.

Describing the excitement one feels knowing they’re about to plough into their first bravas in six months is harder than decrypting a Shakespearean Sonnet. But much like those emotions I felt when my Mum banned me from Bubble O’ Bill ice creams at the age of 10, the hollowness experienced after eating this excuse of a brava was obvious. Too big, too raw, sauce too tomatoey. 3/10 on the bravameter. Brots de Vi, Girona.

Consistent and reliable. Always a brava you can trust at Cub. The sauce really was the stand out of this bravameterdish. For the brava hunters searching for spice, perhaps these will be too mild for you. The flavours came together beautifully to give you that warm sensation inside. However, with that brown crisp on display, I must say I was a little let down with the softness inside the brava. 7/10 on the bravameter. Cub, Girona.

Of course, feel free to submit your own bravas reviews on instagram,  follow & tag @bravameter and they might just pick it up!

And stay on the lookout for updates over the spring and summer, the search for Bravas in Rio (maybe… we haven’t asked Heppy about that yet) and more into the thought and process behind the reviews.
