We are so in love with this: A cycling card game. Perfect for people like me who could never ever keep up with the pros, but would love to experience the thrills, and be part of the tactics. Who doesn’t want to play Director Sportif for a day? Also, it’s made by two guys named Ben, (both of them) which makes keeping them straight hard sometimes. Both are passionate cyclists (clearly) who have been working on this project for a few years. I’ve been lucky enough to get to play test the game, before it’s released, and had a quick chat with the Bens.
“The aim is to get one of the riders in your team into a break and win the race. In a heads up game this means using some of your team to ride defensively, but in three or more player games you’ll have to team up with your opponents, so conversation and back-stabbing tactics are all a part of the game” said Ben 1.
“That’s the basic dynamic but there are plenty of ways to interrupt play. Changing road types, adverse weather or a puncture card makes sure everyone is on their toes” Ben 2 followed up with.
Equally important to the dynamics of the game is the artistry behind the cards. Up and coming illustrator Adrienne Hawkes is designing each card with bespoke illustrations. From what I can gather, many of the riders may be inspired by past and present professionals, but not directly. My first game is going to be spent guessing who is who.
PS. we hear there are going to be lady cyclists in here too. Thats f-ing awesome.
